Got questions?

How long will it take for my vision to improve after eye surgery?

Vision recovery varies depending on the type of surgery. For many procedures like vitrectomy or epiretinal membrane removal, vision may gradually improve over several weeks to months. It’s normal for vision to be blurred immediately after surgery, especially if a gas bubble was used in the eye.

Can I watch TV, read, or use a computer after surgery?

Yes, using your eyes for activities like reading or watching TV will not strain them or harm your recovery. However, it’s important to follow your surgeon’s specific advice, especially if you’ve had gas or oil inserted into your eye, which may require specific head positioning (posturing).

What should I do if I experience pain or increased redness after my operation?

Mild discomfort, grittiness, or redness is common after surgery and usually resolves within days to weeks. However, if you experience severe pain, increasing redness, or sudden vision changes, you should contact the hospital or visit the A&E department immediately, as these may indicate a serious complication.

When can I drive again after surgery?

You will be advised at your post-operative clinic whether it is safe to resume driving. This depends on the vision in your un-operated eye and your overall visual acuity. In some cases, you may also need to inform the DVLA of your surgery.

I cannot praise the staff involved in my care enough. Everyone i encountered from the gentleman on the door through to the reception, secretarial and nursing staff were extremely friendly, professional and efficient. My consultant was exceptional – how do you thank someone who restores your eyesight? Miss Wickham and her team have provided exceptional care – I am eternally grateful.
